From 1 March 2010 SARS will require a logbook that differentiates between business and private kilometers to substantiate the portion claimed for the business part of the travel allowance. The practice of deeming the first 18 000 kilometers travel in the year, as private kilometers falls away.  In short SARS view on this is : NO LOGBOOK - NO CLAIM! One can literally loose thousands of rands per year if you don't keep an accurate logbook.

Keeping a manual logbook requires a lot of discipline and is obviously very time consuming. Compared with the eLogger you can easily spend 8000% more time, keeping your manual logbook. eLogger is an electronic unit with a built-in GPS which uitlizes satellites to determine your exact position and distance travelled. The unit uses the vehicle's battery as a power source and is only switched on when the ignition is turned on. A built-in vibration sensor automatically detects any movement and logs the date, time and the purpose of the trip. When the ignition is turned off and the vehicle is stationary for longer than 10 minutes, the distance travelled and the end coordinates is logged. The only action required by the user is to select either "business" or "private" on the push button interface before starting the trip.
